Exotics, their care and needs

The world of exotic and tropical birds is fascinating. On the one hand, their cheerful colors and sounds make them very attractive for bird lovers, and on the other hand, they are excellent companions. You can spend hours and hours observing their beautiful flapping and short, fast movements – they are wonderful! We invite you to get to know them a little better.

Recommendations for the care of exotic birds

Since they come from faraway places, the first doubt you may have when you take an exotic bird home is its ability to adapt. In spite of their fragile appearance, they are very resistant birds with a great capacity of acclimatization to new homes. But to make their arrival home easier, it is best that we take care of optimizing the environment to welcome our new friends.

These vibrant and colourful birds are very social animals, they love to live in groups – they think that this way they will never be alone and they will be able to have fun when you are not around. Also, they are ideal for the whole family.

If there are children in the house, from the age of six, you can delegate some of the care tasks, so the children will learn new values and feel important in taking over some of the responsibilities of caring for them.

Cage and accessories

  • What Should The Cage Of An Exotic Bird Look Like?

As always, our advice is to offer them the best conditions to raise them and to live as comfortable as possible. That is achieved by giving them all the space you can afford , the bigger the cage and the more they can fly , the better for them. The birdhouse must be at least 50 cm x 40 cm x 60 cm so that they can play inside it.

  • Where to put the cage of an exotic?

Never put the cage in direct sun, it is better to place it away from drafts and outside in the shade, as long as the temperature is pleasant.

  • What accessories do you need the cage of an exotic bird ?

Once you have decided the right location for the cage , you will have to think about customizing it to the taste of your little exotic bird . In addition to its corresponding inverted drinker and feeder , you should put a bowl for fresh fruit and vegetables.

They are very curious and need a lot of exercise – think of the amount of stimulation in the rainforests where most of them come from – so if you provide the cage with several perches and toys specific to their species, they will be very grateful.

Bedding and cleaning

  • How do you clean the cage of an exotic bird?

The cage of an exotic bird is very easy to clean , we advise you to devote a little time a week to clean the bars with a wet scrubber . Each day, when you replace the water and food, you can use that time to rinse the feeder and drinker, so that dirt and debris will not accumulate too much. And for a more thorough cleaning you can de-worm the cage once a month with an anti-dust mite insecticide.

As far as the base of the cage is concerned, the most recommendable are the biological beds, such as the vegetable bed, the corn sand or the clean and dry shout. The bedding is changed depending on the birds you have, usually every two days, but you’ll notice as you go.
